What is Connexions?
There are eight Connexions principles, all of which have practical implications for schools and colleges:
- Raising aspirations - every school/college will have at least one Personal Adviser allocated to them. The number of hours will be negotiated through the Partnership Agreement.
- Meeting individual need - Connexions needs to work with school/college staff to identify student's needs and to identify the support they need and suitable actions to take.
- Reflecting young people's views - this means not just consulting young people but encouraging them to take an active part in planning services and activities.
- Inclusion - keeping young people in learning. Connexions will work with schools and colleges in the development of vocational and work-related learning.
- Partnership - achieving more together. This will include not only Connexions and the school/college, but the input of other agencies eg Community Education, the health services.
- Community - drawing on resources, both staff and provision from local employers, voluntary and community organisations.
- Extending opportunities - Connexions supports schools and colleges to ensure that information is available for students on a range of issues through websites, software, books and publications.
- Evidence-based practice - there is no given formula about how Connexions will work in schools and colleges. It must be adapted to reflect the school or college priorities and needs while ensuring that all young people are supported.
