September Guarantee

Did your son or daughter leave school this year? Perhaps they went on to sixth form college or a further education college, but only took a one-year course?

Why is this important? Well it comes down to the plans that your son or daughter has put in place for their future.

Did you know that every young person leaving Year 11 this year, or who left Year 11 last year, is guaranteed an offer of an appropriate place to continue in learning, starting this September. This is called the September Guarantee.

What is the September Guarantee?

As part of the September Guarantee young people who have no definite plans for September, will be provided with the information, advice and guidance they need, to take up an offer of learning or LSC-funded training.

But what is actually guaranteed?

The offer of learning must be appropriate for the individual young person. So it will have to take into account their qualifications, be at a convenient location that they can travel to, and provide learning or training in the industry sector that they are interested in.

The offer can be:

Guarantees don’t come along very often. If either, you or your son/daughter would welcome some impartial help and advice about what to do next, Youth and Connexions advisers are available to provide such support.

Take control of the future

Did you know that you will continue to receive Child Benefit if your son or daughter goes on to sixth form college, FE college or starts an LSC-funded training programme?

To make sure this happens you will need to contact the Child Benefit Department, on 0845 302 1444.

Your son or daughter can also apply for the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

EMA is a weekly payment of up to £30 for eligible young people looking to take full-time further education courses, or LSC-funded training. And it won’t affect any other support or benefits that your family receives. Call the Freephone helpline on 0800 121 8989.

For more information contact your local Youth and Connexions centre on Freephone 0800 085 4448. Or feel free to call in to see an adviser.
