What is an Apprenticeship?

The Facts:

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the Learning & Skills Council has made some changes to the structure of Apprenticeships, so that young people in school and employees aged 25+ can also benefit from vocational training. However, most employers will be looking to employ apprentices aged 16 -24.
There are more than 150 types of Apprenticeship available, and each one has been designed to be relevant to the needs of that particular industry.
Each Apprenticeship will last between one and three years, depending on the occupation and the level of study.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way for businesses to develop employees with the skills and experience that they need. While for the apprentice it is an opportunity to get hands-on experience, on-the-job training, and gain respected qualifications at the same time.

Over the course of the Apprenticeship, employees will work towards the following:

National Vocational Qualifications - providing practical skills in specific occupational areas;
Key Skills qualifications - essential work-related skills like IT and communication, application of number, problem solving, teamwork and improving learning and performance;
Technical certificates - vocationally related qualifications that provide the underpinning knowledge of the NVQ e.g. BTEC National Certificate or City & Guilds Progression Award.

Employers will provide the apprentice with an induction into their role and on-the-job training. Off-the-job training will be arranged by a training provider, usually on a day release or bloc release basis. The training provider will also produce a training plan and manage the apprentice's regular assessments.
